Art 230: Gift Booklet Design

The assignment was to design a 7"x10" booklet of a talk from the most recent General Conference, April 2026 (opens a new tab). We were to create this as a gift and use typography to invite readers to engage with the content.

Project Parameters:

Of course, the first step was to select a talk. There were so many good ones, but I really loved the points that Elder Soares (opens a new tab) made about so many competing voices today. The imagery of the vines also appealed to me, and I thought that might create some interesting design opportunities. Of course, the first steps were to brainstorm and sketch. The booklets were meant to have a theme that carried from spread to spread.

The concept I wanted to try was to have the words from Jesus Christ form a sturdy vine that carried throughout the pages. "Wrapping" around the main trustworthy vine would be smaller, distracting vines, like the voices of the world.

Once we had the main concept of the booklet established, we needed to design a cover that fit. That meant more sketches, more drafts :D

I kept feeling unhappy with the overall feel of my booklet. I wanted it to reflect "vines," but it felt so dark and too much like the depths of a jungle. My instructor gave me some really great feedback, and I pulled the whole color scheme lighter and added a gradient to the main "vine" to help it feel more rounded like a true vine would feel. My instructor also pointed out that the way I cropped my only-permissible image was "cheeky," since I cropped it like a leaf to carry on the vine theme. At the end of it, I felt very happy with what I created.
